Jerusalem and they traveled from that most northern part just outside of Israel uh back to capernium into the decapolis through peria into Jericho that's where we were last week and Jericho it lies to the east of Jerusalem not too far uh by our Reckoning uh but remember that uh uh there's also something big that happens that is not included in the Book of Mark that takes place before the triumphal entry you can find out about it in John chapter 11 it's the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead and what a powerful miracle that was and we also learned about other Miracles like in John 12 we read about Christ being anointed at Bethany in preparation for Christ's death maybe not a miracle I should say but a momentous occasion uh but also uh in Jericho he had his uh encounter with little zakus zakus he was a we little man right yall remember that climbed up in a sycamore tree yall remember that um he did all those things that aren't recorded here in The Book of Mark now we call this when we celebrate the triumphal entry As Americans we celebrate it on Palm Sunday right it actually doesn't take place on a Sunday unfortunately uh we celebrate it that way because we gather on the first day of the week the uh the Lord's day uh but the triumphal entry actually takes place on a Monday so it's a a Monday before his crucifixion John we know this because John he says that it is six days before the Sabbath it's a Sunday and oh Saturday I should say and Christ he is Anointed by Mary and lazarus's home and the next day Monday is when the triumphal entry takes place now while Pilot's entrance displayed power and fear into the city into Jerusalem Jesus he entered into Jerusalem with humility and peace remember that Christ's approach to Jerusalem is from the East Eastern side of the city through the the kidan
valley he he starts this procession from a city uh just a village just outside of Bethany and bethe uh to Jerusalem and it's likely that Christ entered through a gate that is known as the beautiful gate this is in contrast to a similar entrance earlier that day in Jerusalem that took place on the western side of the city where pilate entered when pilate entered he would have gone to The Fortress of Antonio which overlooks in a domineering way over the temple of God the way that Romans came in was a strong reminder that they were not a free people but they were an oppressed people a strong reminder for Jewish revolutionaries and protesters to say behave yourselves lest the full brunt of Rome come down on you it wasn't unusual for Jewish revolts to take place on this day it's actually because of a Jewish Revolt that the city of Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD fulfilling lots and lots of scripture but a Roman entrance into the city would have been a display of military power and wealth and Pomp and Glory Runners would make their way through the streets make way make way and the soldiers would March in with their Spears and their swords and their Shields and their armor glistening in sun Pilot's regular place of of residence during this time was in cesaria By the Sea it's a Roman city so he entered from the West they would have come with with horses ridden by leaders it would have C come displaying prisoners of War mighty men that maybe had rebelled pilate would have entered with chariot along with his household being carried in by servants and I don't think that there was anyone in the crowd that was cheering when when pilate came into the city not during this time anyways you didn't have romanist he had people viewing them as oppressors the
enemy but yet later that day Jesus he enters with celebrations and shouts in a glorious procession with no military not a horse no wealth or pomp or anything like that but just joyful followers and especially those who are his followers would you stand with me in honor of God's word as we read Mark 11 verses 1- 11 God's word it says this now when they drew near to Jerusalem to bethe and Bethany at the Mount of Olives Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them go into the village in front front of you and immediately as you enter it you will find a Colt tied on which no one has ever set untie it bring it if anyone says to you why are you doing this say the Lord has need of it and we'll send it back here immediately they went away and found a cult tied at a door outside in the street and they untied it some of those standing there said to them what are you doing untying the Colt they told them that Jesus had said that they let what Jesus had said and they let him go and they brought the cult to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it and he sat on it and many spread their cloaks on the road and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields and those who went before and those who followed were shouting Hosanna blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord blessed is the coming Kingdom of Our Father David hosana in the highest and he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple when he he had looked around at everything as it was already late he went out to Bethany with the 12 so Lord we do thank you so much just for this time that we get to have to uh know your word and understand your word and study your word god this is uh such a familiar passage that we revisit just about every year
God and so Lord I pray that you would help it to fall fresh in new on our hearts and on our minds it's important so help us to grasp both the glory and the gravity of what's taking place in this passage we ask that um you would be with our people God especially the many that are sick that we love that we know Lord for those that are healing or in need of healing God we lift them up to you we just ask that you would focus our minds and our hearts on what your word has to say to us right now we surrender it to you we just ask for your will to be done in Jesus name amen well our passage begins two miles east of Jerusalem proper outside of the beautiful gate you go online today and you look at the road that runs from uh Bethany to Beth uh Beth fagy um it seems as though it Mark has this wrong and a lot of people they'll say aha that's a contradiction right and they get all upset and everything actually if you study archaeology in the Roman roads it did go indeed from Bethany to bethe now these these towns they were situated on the slopes of uh of the Mount of Olives Mount of Olives is roughly 2,000 feet higher than the kidan valley it runs along the Eastern side of the sea and I I tell yall that because Christ is over looking the city and he is looking on it not with fear and trepidation or unease or anything like that but he looks upon that City with sorrow in fact it's not recorded here but in the other Gospels it says that Jesus wept over and lamented the future of the city of Jerusalem but before he does that he tells the disciples to go into the village and to go and get a cult and cult it's never been ridden on and bring it back over to this place one of the things that Jesus did was he he he borrowed some stuff okay and there were all things things that people had never used you look right here uh as an examp
we could we could use Mary as an example right no baby had ever been in there uh we could look at uh at this example no no cult had ever or no one had ever ridden this this Colt this F of a donkey we could look at the uh tomb that he would lay in no no person had ever been laid in that tomb very unique what Jesus is doing and he is clearly fulfilling prophecy Jesus he knows exactly where that cult's going to be he is predestined it to happen he has brought it to fruition he is the Creator and the sustainer of all things he created the cult he created the owner of the cult he created the Rope or at least the raw materials to make the Rope he also knew that the owner would be inclined to give it to two men for the Lord's use if someone comes up to you and says he let me borrow your car why the Lord needs it right many of us would say get out of here go away not this man but you think about uh uh Jesus we we look at this in the Book of Mark as Jesus all of a sudden showing up here into the southern part of the Kingdom of Israel um that's not entirely the full picture we know based upon John that he went to the Jerusalem on many occasions we also know that he tried to throw him off of the mount uh to kill him which he slipped out uh but we we've seen and I've already mentioned it Lazarus being raised from the dead that's the big one everyone has heard about that in this in the little Villages of Bethany where Lazarus lives and Beth fagy so when Jesus send someone ahead to say the Lord has need of it that person knew exactly who was requesting it it's not a mystery Jesus needs it Jesus needs it the crowd they they were enthusiastic to celebrate the Passover and Jesus's entry on a cult it is a deliberate fulfillment of Prophecy from Zechariah
99 and he's making a bold statement about his kingship but I want to point out something to you this is the only time in The Book of Mark that he comes to Jerusalem so the original readers they're only going to view Jerusalem in a negative light the place where Jesus is going to die and of course there were other confrontations there but the prophet Ezekiel before I get to uh Zachariah the prophet Ezekiel in uh 586 BC he had a vision from the Lord and in that vision he saw the glory of God departing from the temple and the glory of God went over the kidan valley and it went and it rested on the Mount of Olives we know that Jesus is the glory of the Father the exact imprint of his nature the glory of God who is on that Mount of Olives returning not to Jerusalem his goal is not to just make it to the city his goal is to go back to the temple and in a way he is doing that to show and demonstrate that the glory of God has indeed returned to mankind it has returned to his people not to be worship though okay that that that is part of it but his purpose in coming back was to die as a sacrifice for our sins Zachariah he's the prophet that predicted this moment centuries prior he speaks of a humble yet righteous King who arrives signifying peace he says Rejoice greatly oh Daughter of Zion that's that's Jerusalem the daughter of Zion shout aloud oh daughter of Jerusalem behold your king is coming to you righteous in having salvation is he humble and mounted on a donkey on a cold of AD Jesus is deliberately and intentionally fulfilling this propy and yet zear is not just one that came with you know that this was prophesied much earlier probably roughly 1500 years in the Book of Genesis 49 there Jacob is blessing his sons and he passes over the the older to Judah
and he says this Judah your brothers shall praise you your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies your father's Sons shall bow before you Judah is a lion's Cub from the prey my son you have gone up he stooped down he crouches as a lion and as a lioness Who Dares Rouse him the scepter shall not depart from Judah nor the ruler staff from between his feet until tribute comes to him and to him shall be the Obedience of the peoples binding his F to the vine and his donkey's colat to the choice Vine he has washed his garments and wine and is V in the blood of grapes to dece the of the tribe of Judah for in Genesis 49 do you see the kingship of Christ am I dead now you are okay thanks I can go back where did I I'm just messing with you there it is do you see the lion of the tribe of Judah Jesus he was from the tribe of Judah by the way do you see the kingship of Christ do you see the promised ruler coming on a donkey do you see Christ being crushed for many years the Jewish people they had expected their King not just from Zachariah but all the way back in Genesis 49 they were expecting their King to arrive on a donkey and it's exactly what happened when Jesus sits on the donkey what is happening is is for years Jesus has been avoiding this event he's been avoiding having glory for himself he's been avoiding revealing himself publicly until this exact moment it's only been the last six months that he's told his disciples that he was going to Jerusalem to die that he was going to be persecuted in delivered over into the hands of sinful wicked men and that he would die and he would rise again on the third day it's only been the last six months that he's been talking about that but here
Christ Reveals His kingship and he invites the crowds to glorify him he invites the praise he beckons the worship Jesus he could have just slipped in to Jerusalem with all the rest of his disciples he could have just quietly entered with his head covered and walked around and did his own thing but instead right now his aim is to get praise and glory and recognition not from a sense of Pride not at all but to fulfill all prophecy we could say that Jesus engineered this to take place and with this being the highest and holiest day on the Jewish calendar most of the people clearly understood the Messianic message that Jesus was communicating don't miss this Jesus he is affirming his identity as the promised Messiah and King he is affirming his identity as the promised Messiah and King he's not hidden anymore he's not hidden anymore he's riding a humble donkey not a glorious warhorse yet one day he will return on a war horse one day he will set up his visible Reign upon the Earth but here in this passage he is coming as Savior what a comfort it is for us as the people of God to see that all that God has promised all that God has purposed will come to pass we don't have to worry if God is going to be uh faithless to his word we don't have to worry about that God is a God who keeps all of his promises and he keeps his promises to you we might not like all the things that happen we may not be exactly excited about things like Amendment Three passing but we can still Trust In The Sovereign will of God we're not repressed not crushed persecuted not abandoned struck down not destroyed just as Christ's Ministry was moving to this certain point in Redemptive history God he is still working in the lives of his people and
he is fulfilling his plan in your life as well and so hold on to the promises of God the promises of God are for his people and so you have to ask yourself do you trust the promises of God do you trust the word of God and Jesus he knows that he is going to the Cross yet he still chooses to be obedient to the father he knows the plan he knows that the plan is the resurrection I don't I Jesus is of course omniscient right one of the things that You' never really fully comprehend right omniscient but did he know what sin would be like as he who became sin who knew no sin but became sin became sin for us it's a mystery but the Triune God had had carefully placed everything together for these events and Jesus he is courting danger and look at the reaction of the crowds look at verses 8 and n it says this and many spread their cloaks on the roads and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields and those who went before and those who followed were shouting Hosanna blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord and John he adds to this celebratory description uh in his gospel he says they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him crying out Hosanna blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord even the king of Israel now the palm branches they were a symbol of Israel for many many years it was during the maban revolution where the Jews rebelled against Greece that the symbol for national pride came from Judas macabus he delivered Jerusalem from uh from Greek oppression and they celebrated by cutting off palm branches and singing and dancing and things like that the shouts of hosana they were common during PR Passover it wasn't unique to Jesus okay they would they would cry it out to the temple cried out to the priests but not like this because here
is Jesus riding in and they are asking this man this God save us and they're crying out over and over and over again save us save us save us and yet their salvation that they're asking for is incorrect they're not asking for Jesus to save them from their sins they think that the Romans are their biggest issue these people the they're not saved by their actions just simply because they've asked God to save them save them from what see we got to come to Jesus for salvation from our sins not for a better life not for freedom from addiction not for God to bless our marriage or you know we're starting to have children we need to go to church God might use those things to draw you in but your biggest need is not God's help in those areas your biggest need is salvation from your sin that separate you from God and so we come to Jesus as our Lord savior and say God okay you are my king you're going to rule my life you are my Lord not just savior of my sin but king of everything and it's important to note that Jesus he comes as our King in humility not not in Grandeur of Earthly Kings Jesus Is God Almighty he doesn't need all of that he can Pierce our hearts with the still Small Voice he can wreck our lives in the Silence of prayer and he can Pierce our hearts deeper than any sword ever could and the crowd they spread their cloaks on the roads and I don't believe that anyone calling themselves a Jew at this point would have done that for a Roman oppressor basically they're laying themselves down and they're saying walk all over us we we submitting to you this shows the peace and the humility and the sacrificial love and how it conquers the
hearts of men and women this past week we saw a lot of change in our nation and we think God that uh we have a leader that at least welcomes the authority of Jesus um probably doesn't keep him right but it's not my job to judge whether he's a Christian or not that's between him and God but Church remember that Christianity grows through the Conquering of Hearts not through legislation what I mean by that and I do believe okay as a as a post-millennial Christian okay uh I do believe that the ideal is a Christian law in a Christian Society and I don't think that legislating morality is a bad bad thing because that's literally the function of law it is um however as we saw with the passing of amendment three a lot of people's moral compasses are messed up and but the key is not campaigning that's fine to do do do do you okay right the key is not campaigning it's evangelism and discipleship if you want to influence the culture it doesn't come through electing your people it comes through Ministry and that's a hard thing for a lot of people to wrap their heads around the key is displaying Christ the key is being like him and we can do that by following jesus' example even here like being humble I mean how many he Jesus literally served from this crazy huge cup okay none of us could have this kind of schedule that Jesus had for three years and not be completely burnt out by the end of
it but Jesus he he humbly served for three three and a half years he poured himself out every single day and he wasn't Desiring recognition wasn't Desiring status in fact he actively avoided it as long as possible until the father said now go get your glory son and so one of the things that we could learn is to learn to lead our circles with humility also examine the question of what what do you want from Jesus I've heard plenty of times this week why would God allow Amendment Three to pass and I'm trying not to harp on this but it's a great example okay which I guess is fine right I guess we can ask that question but did we try to win people with clever arguments or do we try to win people with the gospel the Bible says that men love darkness and hate light the Bible tells us not to participate in the works of darkness but rather expose them yet we're also called to do it with love Grace and Truth pointing people to the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that's what we're called to do look at the crowd's response here it is full of praise and misunderstanding they were shouting Hosanna Hosanna blessed is he who comes in the name of the the Lord blessed is the coming Kingdom of Our Father David hosana and the the highest and people they were looking for blessings from Jesus but not deliverance from sin Jesus he didn't come to just heal diseases or make the lame walk or raise the dead he came to make sacrifice for sin so do you want Jesus for help in your life or do you want Jesus for salvation you want Life Enhancement or you want eternal life I I've met many many people who when they discover cancer or lose a job
or a child is struggling they they come to Jesus for help and that's where they should go I applaud you that's exactly where you need to be but not because of the cancer not because of the loss of the job not because of the child giving you a hard time but for the sake of your soul you need Jesus so we can come to Christ which is the right place but with the wrong motive and leave empty-handed and it's just like that for the people Jerusalem's not going to be destroyed for another 35 years you got to think that those people that are kind of like well that was another one that we missed didn't we the thing is is that when people come to Christ for help with their problems often times they find help for their problems and praise the Lord for that it's exactly what Jesus did in all of his ministry but then all of a sudden things go okay and then they fade off into the distance we never see them again and that breaks my heart and I hope that breaks yours as well because Jesus didn't come to deliver the Jews from Rome he came to make a way to escape hell and that's a far worse enemy that's a far worse enemy and in order to escape you too have to come to Christ and follow him as Lord and savior he comes to Jerusalem as the king and then he goes to the temple to prove the point that he is the sacrificial King verse 11 it says he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple and when he had looked around at everything as it was already late he went out to Bethany with the 12 it's a little anticlimactic isn't it the Lord that had departed in 586 BC had returned to the temple and no one knew it but he will deal with their hearts he'll deal with them tomorrow or next week because he's gonna be flipping over
tables and stuff that'll be fun but we have to ask that question are we aligning our lives with Jesus our humble King are we seeking forgiveness and walking by faith are we doing that I mean for us we're called to repent and align Our Lives with the Lord and the the triumphal entry reminds us of God's fulfillment of his promises it shows us the humility of Christ's kingship it shows us the call to follow Christ's example of servant Hood it also shows us the importance of genuinely responding to his call to Salvation Jesus isn't just some historical example for us to follow but he is The Sovereign ruler of the entire universe and he calls us to follow him now gonna kind of wrap this up with a a head heart hand these are a little longer there because I just need to try to tighten these up a little bit and I knew that was going to kind of go a little longer but um God he wants you to know that Jesus Christ is King of your whole life not just the needy parts you see he invites us to examine our response to his kingship it doesn't come with military power or political Ambitions or anything like that it's with humility and a fulfillment of the promises of God and I want you to know that Jesus he didn't just come to fulfill those those temporary needs and yet he does those but he came to fulfill the the Eternal needs that we have so today ask yourself is he someone that you look to when life gets hard or is he truly the Lord of your life so as we go from here let's commit to seeing Jesus for who he truly is our humble King who fulfilled God's promises and let's respond by giving him our full Allegiance right um heart God wants you to believe that Jesus is enough for your salvation it is Jesus who was perfectly obedient it was Jesus who went to the cross it was Jesus that was despised and
rejected in order to redeem every single person that would come to him by faith if you are a follower of Christ your penalty is fully paid for and so walk in that freedom shout out of hosan and praise the Lord and and thank the king of Israel for saving you remember that he comes to give life and to give it abundantly he came to give us hope also here's how you can live this out is that God he wants you to respond to him by surrendering control to him we could just say surrendering to him Jesus came with humility and we too were called to surrender in humility to his authority let go of that Pride trusting your plan for your life and follow his plan his guidance because we believe that Jesus Christ is King amen and he is and so submit to him as king so you might have to surrender a worry that you've been holding on to a relationship that you need to give forgiveness to a sin that you know was against the Lord and pray to the Lord to help you and remember that our lord Jesus went to Jerusalem for a purpose he is trustworthy and he is here for peace and for transformation let's pray father we do love you and we thank you for this day that you've given to us and we pray that you would help us to uh surrender uh Our Lives to you and uh Lord As we sing a song a bit on the nose I Surrender all Lord I pray that that would be the prayer of our hearts God uh that we would surrender completely totally fully trusting in you the author of Salvation the Prince of Peace the King of Kings God thank you for loving us and for providing a way for us to be saved we thank you for it all in Jesus name amen let's all stand and let's worship together [Music] All to Jesus I
surrender all to him I freely give I will ever love and trust him in in his presence daily live I surrender all I surrender all all to thee my blessed saor I surrender all [Music] and Lord that is our prayer that we would surrender um completely to you and I just ask that uh as we leave here today that we would be a people surrendered to your will help us to walk Faithfully uh before you all the days of our lives and thank you for this beautiful reminder of you being The Sovereign glorious wonderful King and savior um we just ask we walk Faithfully before you in jesus' name amen you may go in peace thank you [Music]
