And I thank you and praise you that we get to continue in worship now through music, through looking at your word, Lord, through fellowship, through giving, all these intricate parts of worship, ascribing worth to you for what you have done in paying a debt that you did not owe. Lord, we just thank you and we praise you. And I ask now, Lord, as we continue in worship, that you would just help our worship team as they lead us and for Pastor Cody as he opens the word to us that Lord, all these parts of this service would be a fragrant offering to you. We ask this in your name. Amen. I invite you to stand now as we continue in worship. Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power? Are you washed in the blood of lamb? You've lived on among us. You've given up your life for us today. Lord, we show our gratitude by this offering. And it's not to earn that love or that forgiveness, but just purely gratitude. And we thank you for your grace and your mercy. Amen. Today's catechism is the question is did God abandon everyone to stay trapped in sin and suffering? The answer is in Ephesians 4 or correction Ephesians 1 4-5. Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and blameless before him and loved he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ according to the purpose of his will. Galatians 3:21-22 says, "Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not. For if a law had been given that could have given life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. But the scripture imprisoned everyone everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. [Music] One day when heaven was filled with his praises, one day when sin was as black as could

be, Jesus came for to be born of a virgin, dwelt among men. My example is he. The word became fleshed. Light shined among us. His glory revealed. Living he loved me. Dying he saved me. Mary, he carried my sins far away. Rising, he justified freely forever. One day he's coming. Oh, glorious day. Oh, glorious day. [Music] One day they led him on Calvary's mountain. One day they nailed him to die on a tree. Suffering, anguished, despised and rejected. Bearing our sins, my redeemer is he. One day he's coming. Oh, glorious day. Oh, glorious [Music] day. One day the great could concealed him no longer. One day the stone rolled away from the door. Then he arose over death he had conered. Thank you for this resurrection Sunday. Thank you for sending your son to earth to live, to teach, to love, and die for our sins so that we may have eternal life with you. Dear Lord, help us to take each words from the songs we've just sung and from what Pastor Cody is going to preach us. Dear Lord, guide us, direct us, have us be your hands, your feet, your ears, your eyes, and your voices every day this week. We thank you, Jesus, for the blood that has cleansed all of our

sins. We love you, Lord. Amen. Happy Yeah. Happy Easter. Am I coming through? No. Happy Easter. Test test. One, two. All right. Thank the Lord that the mic was off while I was worshiping back there. Uh, if you have your Bible, and I hope that you do, please turn with me to Psalm 16. He is risen. Amen. Uh thank you for being here at First Baptist Church today. My name is Cody. I'm the pastor here. Um been here as the senior pastor uh six years. This may I'll be on staff for nine. And uh so for many of you, I'm an old familiar face. For some of you, I'm just an old face. And so uh anyways, I'm glad that you're here today. We're talking today about security. Security. We we we talk about that in our culture a lot today, don't we? We talk about securing border, securing voting, securing food, social security. Someone takes a shot at the president and we ask what happened to the security. We all want security, right? It's why we some of us are packing, right? Because we want to secure ourselves and those that are around us. Let me ask you, in a world that's just absolutely full of uncertainty and job loss sickness death, where do you find your security? Where do you find it? You see, security, it's what gives us assurance for our protection, for our health, for our future, right? We we we find security in things like money, right? We we talk about may if I just had a little bit more money, then I'd be more secure. Or maybe you find your security in your relationships, what others think about you, maybe your job, your health. One of the things I hear more and more about people trusting in is themselves, right? Where people have a a

side hustle. You ever heard that? or maybe they just hustle to secure their future, pull yourself up kind of mentality, which is a good mentality to have. But what I've learned is that people tend to falter under the weight of life eventually. You ever let yourself down? I I know I have. If anyone in here has ever failed at a diet, then you know what it's like to let yourself down. But those cheese curds at Culver's are just so good. Hey, but we disappoint ourselves, don't we? All right, whether it's by doing something wrong or something sinful. I I knew a man. He built a absolutely successful company. And he was a hustler, right? He he worked hard. He traveled the entire nation making sales, working tirelessly, gaining millions, losing his marriage, his children, and eventually his health. And we all search for security. But the truth is is that nothing in this world, money, health, even our own grit can truly sustain us. And that's why we're looking at Psalm 16 today because it's where David shows us the unshakable security that's found in God alone. You might be thinking, "But Cody, this is not a gospel passage. This is not a resurrection passage." Okay, why are you even in here? I want to assure you it most definitely is a resurrection passage. Peter and Paul both preach this passage in the book of Acts talking about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Because while this passage was written about David, it finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Now Psalm 16 is what's called a mictum. It's a technical word. All the psalms, no, no one really knows what mictum really means. But what all of the psalms that have a mictum in it, it's describing a difficult time in David's life. Yet also this this reaffirming that David's

confidence is in the Lord. And the same Lord that called him to be king over Israel would also secure his life. David, he calls God his refuge in verse one, if you're looking at it. In verse two, he calls him my lord, which means that he's the only object of David's devotion. He refuses to go o after other gods or even mention them. In verse four, he calls God his favorite thing in verse 5. In verse 7, he says that God has in all of his authority, he is the teacher of David. And from David's relationship with God, we see confidence that God would keep him safe. And today we're talking about being kept by the resurrected king and what that means for you today. If you would please stand with me in honor of God's word as we read Psalm chapter 16 verses 8- 11. God's word it says this. I have set the Lord always before me because he is at my right hand and I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices. My flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to shal or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy. At your right hand are pleasures forever more. And so Lord, we do thank you for this day that you've given to us. We're so thankful for your kindness and your mercy and allowing us uh the breath in our lungs. Uh the the muscles in our in our legs and our arms. Uh the gift of vision even to drive here, God. Um we're so thankful for all of those gifts and we don't deserve any bit of them. And yet you by your grace have chosen to uh allow us uh to be here. We thank you that we have uh access to your word where we can apply it to our lives and learn about the gospel of Christ. And I pray for anyone that may be here that maybe they are just here out of tradition's sake or uh maybe they're searching, maybe they're uh asking some tough questions. Lord, I pray that uh they would find you today

uh as that as that precious jewel in a field. Lord, I pray that you would call people to salvation today. And Lord, for um those of us who are followers, help us, Lord, to live our lives in line with what your word has to say, full of love and grace and truth. Help us, Lord, to uh be attentive to what your word has to say. Deal with our hearts uh as you've dealt with mine over this past week with this passage. We pray that you would uh uh please be with our our many church members that are are sick or are hurting. Uh we want to lift them up to you and ask that you would continue to work in their life. Uh we also want to thank you, Lord, that uh there's some that are here today that uh haven't been able to be with us for a while because of sicknesses, Lord, and you've delivered them, and we just thank you for each one. Father, we ask that you would help our hearts to be attentive now in Jesus name. Amen. Well, let's take a look at uh Psalm 16:8 as we uh begin here today. It's this verse that says, "I have set the Lord always before me because he's he's at my right hand and I will not be shaken." David, he set the Lord always before him. And this is the marker of God being our refuge, our our safe place, our secure place. I want you to before we really dive into this, ask that question. Is God in front of you? Imagine for a moment that you're hiking through a forest that you really you're unfamiliar with. Uh there's no clear path in front of you. The trees are thick. You've lost your way. Uh but you have a compass in hand. And as long as you keep the the compass before you and you're constantly checking on it, you know that if you stay on course, you will get to your destination, setting the Lord before you is is just like that. Keeping the Lord before us means intentionally fixing our focus on him, his guidance, his presence, his truth,

and every step of the way, we're constantly checking on it. Just just like a hiker trusts that compass to avoid aiming wanderously in a a huge thousand acre forest, we trust God to keep us steady. No matter how confusing or how challenging life may get, we when we are constantly checking with the Lord, he becomes our constant reference point. And because of that, we can find unshakable confidence because he's right there with us. He's guiding us along the path, guiding our every decision. And the primary way that we set the Lord before us is firstly by having a saving relationship with the Lord. Do you trust in the Lord? If you don't, then what's your compass? How are you navigating life in your daily choices? you can set the Lord before you or your yourself. Do you allow distractions to come in and determine your direction? Maybe you're a believer and you struggle with putting the Lord before you. Maybe maybe that's something that you need to consider. But a few practical steps that you can take to set before you are one, of course, seeking the Lord through prayer and through fasting. This is a lot easier said than than done clearly. Otherwise, we'd all be praying and fasting a lot more regularly than we are, myself included. But when you are confused about which direction to go, the absolute worst thing that you can do is trust your heart or your gut. Always talk about that with people, right? The Bible says that our heart is is deceptive and wicked. And who can understand that? So, we can't trust that. And you know what your gut is full of so don't trust that. What happens is is that prayer, it aligns our heart with God's. And so we can keep God before us. We also can learn about God's will through studying the scriptures. God's word, it still applies today for thousands of years. It

has spoken and it continues to speak to countless situations. Doesn't specifically address every single thing, but the principles contained in it applied to every situation. The third way is by being involved regularly in a local church, sitting under regular preaching, having those kind of uh uh fellowship with brothers and sisters from different backgrounds and different experiences, using your gifts to help forge you into sharper believers. And Jesus, he did these things and he lived in perfect trust before the Lord. And he was always aligning his will with the fathers. Our sin often leads us to trust in ourselves, but we falter, don't we? We We fall short of the glory of God. But Jesus, the sinless son of God, he trusted the father perfectly, and he obeyed perfectly, even by going to the cross. You see, when he took on your sin and my sin, he paid for us when we would wander, when we would sin. And God raised him up from the dead, proving that his trust was unshaken. And because of his resurrection, you can trust him to forgive your sins and to guide you through all of life's trials as well. Jesus, his unwavering trust in God's presence and God's support is evident throughout his ministry. You see Jesus always tearing himself away to go and pray. And even in the face of so many trials like the cross, Jesus, he was never deterred in his mission. We see his resolve in the garden of Gethsemane praying and his confidence in God's plan. even during his crucifixion. That phrase at my right hand signifies that it's God's strength that sustains him. It is God's protection that gets him through it. And he never wavered from God's plan. Even when he faced the cross, his confidence in God's presence, it culminated in the resurrection where God's power ensured

that Jesus was not shaken by death. And this leads us to the first point which is unshaken trust. Jesus's faith was was so strong that even when Jesus took on our sin and God forsook his son on the cross, he still endured with confidence, not uncertainty, in the plan that they had made from the beginning. The resurrection proves that God was faithful to Jesus, vindicating his trust. Because Jesus was raised, you as a Christian can trust God to give you resurrection after death as well. Romans 8:11 it says, "If the spirit who raised him, if the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his spirit who dwells in you." It doesn't say he may also give it. He doesn't say there's a cap to it. It says that he will give it. And that's a promise from God that you can trust that if you put your faith and trust in him, he will take care of you. And just like Jesus, we can face any of life's challenges with unshakable confidence, knowing that the resurrection guarantees God's presence and ultimate victory. Jesus, his unshaken trust in the Father led him to the cross. He knew that that was the path that the Lord had from for him. That's why he prayed in the garden. But not my will be done, but yours, O Lord, be done. And it led to victory. Victory over sin, victory over death, victory over evil, victory over Satan, victory over hell, victory upon victory upon victory. But victory isn't just about strength. It's about joy. Look at verse 9 here. It says, "Therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices. My flesh also dwells secure." That word gladness carries with it the idea of gloating. Like when someone says that they rejoice over their enemies, it's

that's the word. It's when an enemy's plans have failed. And David, he describes that gladness in his heart. Why? because he's safe in the Lord. He doesn't have anything that he needs to worry about. And David, he faced thousands of enemies, a lot of them from outside of Israel, many of them from within Israel. And God saved him from all of them. That word rejoicing here is yul, which is tied explicitly with dividing spoils of the Lord's victory. So, it I it describes uh a a shouting a shouting with joy. Imagine for a moment, and you're going to have to imagine this, the the Cardinals winning a game with with a walk-off home run, right? And that that'd be exciting, right? Everyone's cheering and clapping. Yeah. And that's the idea of it. Rejoicing. It's joyful. That word security there is the word bata which is directly tied to the feeling of safety when you know that someone's going to come through for you. And this goes back to where it's true of David's relationship with the Lord, but it's ultimately true of Christ. Jesus at the cross, he endured because he knew that joy was on the other side. Jesus's joy and security even in death rested in the assurance of his resurrection. Because Hebrews 12:2 says, "Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfector of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." All right. His flesh was secure because he had full confidence that God would raise him up. And that shows our second point is secure joy. Okay. Jesus's resurrection, it secures our hope beyond the grave. Despite all the agony of the cross, Jesus, he maintained inner joy and trust in what God's plan was. His flesh, it dwelt secure. And it points to his confidence

in the resurrection. That's how he taught. On the third, three days later, the son of man will come back again. Even in in death, Jesus's body was completely secure in God's plan as he entrusted himself to the father. In the resurrection, it proves God's security. Jesus's body did not remain in the tomb. As it says in Luke 24:6, "He is not here, but he has risen." And this assures Christians that you too will be raised up incorruptible. And so it is with everyone that participates in that resurrection. Writer of 1 Corinthians says, "What is sown is perishable. What is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor. It is raised in glory. It is swn in weakness. It is raised in power. It is swn a natural body. It is raised a spiritual body. Sin it destroys. Sin. It weighs us down. Sin. It breaks our fellowship with God. It steals our joy. It steals it brings guilt. It brings fear. Okay? If you're a kid, you know, if you do something wrong, you try to hide it from mom and dad. That's the absolute worst thing that you can do. By the way, you come to him. But Jesus, he endured the cross and he bore our sins because he knew that the joy was coming. His resurrection, it proves that he conquered sin and death and it secured forgiveness for all who trust in Christ alone for salvation. That's why we're full of joy. It's because in Christ we are completely forgiven. We are completely free. Sinclair Ferguson, he said, "Men seek safety in the things of this world, but only in Christ risen and reigning do we find a security that death cannot touch." The resurrection, it fills us with with hope and with joy, knowing that our physical death is not the end, but a step towards eternal life with Christ. In Jesus's joy, it secures our hope. But his resurrection offers an

even greater security, victory over death itself. Look at what it says. You will not abandon my soul to sh or let your holy one see corruption. David believed God would not abandon him to the grave. He was completely confident in God's eternal protection. Now, when we see that corruption, we equate that with with decomposition, right? And that's that's a fine way to look at it. It's the most logical way to look at it. But this word actually means destruction in the Hebrew. In other words, David, he was confident in his eternity. But this verse, it's about Jesus, who is the holy one of God. It is Jesus Christ. And Peter, he makes this connection in his Pentecost sermon where he quotes Psalm 16:10 saying, 'You will not let your holy one see corruption. And Peter shows that it's Jesus, not David, rose from the grave that fulfills God's plan. Back in uh 2015, where's my son? Where's Malachi? He's around here. Oh, there you are. Over there. Okay. All right. In 2015, we were at the San Antonio Zoo. Okay. And uh uh I was pushing Lillian around in uh the stroller and it was uh so I had her and um uh we had a whole bunch of family there and everyone else assumed that someone had Malachi. Yeah. Yeah. It's like oh no it's Harambe 2.0, right? Everything went down after Harambe. Um but sorry I got distracted there. Um, and so immediately I I'm going back to the hippos. We're we're in a bird aviary and uh and we just divide. We're just scatter, right? And and we're looking furiously. I'm constantly looking at my phone. I'm looking around. I we got to find our son. There's literally animals that will eat him here. Okay. And and Amber, she goes in the opposite direction towards elephants and uh everyone else. They went somewhere else. But Amber found him and and it was like the whole crowd is looking around. Where is this child's

mom? And we're looking around and and she looks through the crowds and it's like it they just part. There's this teacher holding Malachi. Okay. And of course, Amber, she doesn't even say a word to the teacher or to the woman or anything. She just grabs her baby. Oh my gosh. He's safe. She is safe. You know, we would never just abandon our son at the zoo. But but here's the thing. I do think that sometimes Christians wonder, does God actually love me? Does God actually will will he actually save me? Even even though I have trust in him even though I I believe in in Christ, even though I live for Christ, even though I know in his resurrection that he says that he will, will he actually do that? Because I I know my heart. I know my life. I know the things that I've done. Let me tell you, Christian, God will not abandon you. He will not leave you. He will not forsake you. And he promises that because he has a great love for you. If you are his child, you can have full assurance that he will keep his promise to you. And God did not abandon Jesus to death. Christ's body did not decay. What happened is that Jesus, he was raised up and is exalted as our high king. And as a result, every follower of Christ has full assurance that since Jesus is alive right now, he is alive right now, that we too will be raised up on that last day, death does not have the final say for a Christian. Jesus, he shut down the authority of death at the resurrection and now he has all authority. Paul, he he also preached Psalm 16:10 and when he said, "You will not let your holy one see corruption." He declared Jesus's resurrection offers forgiveness of sins to all who believe. Jesus uh David died. Moses died. Every single religious

founder died. Even Jesus died. But he rose again and he lives forever enthroned on high and one day he will return. It is the fact of the resurrection that gives us comfort and a safe refuge when the world goes crazy. And it's crazy and when things don't work out like we hoped and it's going to happen. It's like a a a shepherd rescuing his sheep from the very precipice of a cliff. Faith in Christ, it pulls us from death's grip and it keeps us for eternity. Third point, holy triumph. The resurrection is the ultimate fulfillment of verse 10. As Jesus's body, it was preserved from decay. Unlike David's, David David decayed. Okay. This victory over death's corruption ensures believer's resurrection to eternal life. Isn't it crazy to know that in our sin, we deserve death in decay and separation from God. But Jesus, he took on our punishment on the cross. And and God didn't abandon him into the grave. He raised him up and defeated death's actual corruption. And through his death and resurrection, Jesus, he offers you forgiveness and the promise of eternal life if you trust in him. And because Jesus defeated death, we can now live with confidence and full assurance knowing that he has overcome the grave for us. And he promises resurrection for you who trust in him. And because because of those things, we can know that he didn't just secure our resurrection. He also offered a path to eternal life. Look, look at verse 11. It says, "You make known to me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy. at your right hand are pleasures forever more. Jesus's resurrection and ascension to God's right hand fulfills this. As he

entered into eternal joy and glory, he reveals the path of life for humanity. The path of life is the path of Christ. Jesus, he told us in John 14:6 that he is the way, the truth, and the life. And there's fullness of joy in the presence of Christ. And the writer of Hebrews, he elaborates on this. And you know, you should write these these cross references down. Look them up. In Hebrews chapter 10, verse 19 through 22, it says this. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is through his flesh. And since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart full in full assurance of faith with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Do you hear that invitation there? There's an invitation calling you to draw near with a pure heart. Come, let's do that together. And that leads to the final point, which is eternal joy. Jesus's resurrection, it opens the path to God's presence. Now, one of my favorite things to do, and I'm very blessed to be a part of a church that allows me time for refreshment and vacation. A lot of pastors, they don't have that. One of my favorite times a year is Thanksgiving. We always go down to Texas to go visit my in-laws and and and spend time down there. And of course, Thanksgiving Day is great, right? There's there's tons of food and laughter and catching up and joking and and and and food and and football and uh everyone's just reliving memories and food and it's just it's wonderful right? The thing is is that it ends. Like the food runs out. The the stories end. The memories can't be relived but a couple of times before you're like, but being in the presence of God,

being being seated with him. I I want you to imagine just in your head a feast with every delight, laughter, and love, and Jesus welcoming you forever where you're seated with Christ. That's the joy that he has prepared for you. Jesus Christ, he rose again from the dead and the the resurrection is the gateway to this path to eternal life. Jesus, he proves that power that leads to eternal life for us. His presence at God's right hand guarantees all Christians, all Christians, their future in God's presence is secure. The pleasures forever more reflect that eternal fellowship and the glory that Jesus enjoys with the father which he also promises to share with us if you are in Christ. This points to Jesus's role in revealing the path to eternal life to humanity through his death and through his resurrection. See sin, it cuts us off from God's loving presence. It leaves us empty. It leaves us alone. It hopeless. But Jesus's path, his death paid the price for our sins and his resurrection opened the path to eternal joy. And it's by trusting in him that you can be reconciled to God. And you can experience those unending delights forever. In Jesus's resurrection, it invites you to follow Jesus, trusting that through him, you can experience fullness of joy in God's presence forever. Jesus's resurrection, it proves that that unshakable trust that Jesus had in the father. It secures our hope, triumphs over death. It opens the path to eternal joy. And as Christians, we are called to live in that reality. It's not just Easter. That's why we celebrate the resurrection every Sunday here because he's alive and he reigns forever and ever and ever. Amen. You see

the you see the the resurrection of Jesus, it's not just a a historical event. It's the key to salvation from hell. Bible says every single one of us have sinned and our sin separates us from God. Means that I am I deserve everlasting death. But God, he loves you so much that he sent his only son to die on the cross and take on the punishment that you deserve to fully pay for your sin. And on that third day, God, he raised Jesus from the dead, proving that he has actual power over sin and death. Have you taken refuge in Jesus Christ? Today, Jesus offers you forgiveness. He offers you eternal life. He offers you security. Anybody want to check that he's coming, folks. I'm telling you. Is it a warning? Okay. So, here's what we're gonna do. We're going to call it because we got to put safety first. Okay. Um and we will uh go down this hallway right here. Um anyways, kind of wish that that hadn't happened, but I have no control over the weather, but God does and he knows what's best. How about I pray and then we can go. Lord, uh please help our people to stay safe. I don't know what uh is happening, but we trust you as we move into the hallway. Uh we just ask for your safety and your preservation over life and property around our area in Jesus name. Amen. Order early. Go out here. Of course, I can't keep you anywhere. I love you. So sorry.
