I looked there's a few more but 20 was the number that I came up with and it's a great great challenge to just understand what God promised through the old testament for Christ but what we need what I want to look at today is because of limited time exactly what kyle talked about Jesus was a 100 percent man and he was a hundred percent God and he had a true physical need as a hundred percent man Jesus's physical need led to a miraculous spiritual proclamation this spiritual proclamation that we know has echoed through time as we know it is finished this literally changed the course of humanity and was our perfect atonement for our sin it was a perfect completion of his father's will and became the ultimate payment for our sins but Jesus needed in this moment he stated I thirst as a hundred percent man and I find it interesting that this is how God uses us in the greatest ways at times in our deepest moments of need when we are 100 empty as a man or a woman he uses us in incredible ways because all we have left to do is trust him there's times when we as believers these are the times that we grow the most because we're a hundred percent poured
Out Jesus as Jesus was 100 poured out in that moment second corinthians 12 10 says for the sake of Christ then I am content with weakness insults hardships persecutions and calamities for when I am weak then I am strong and Jesus knew this from the cross in that moment of thirst he was at his weakest but in that knowledge itself I feel like as a Christian I have this kind of superpower and I know it sounds weird but hear me out with that when the old devil gets me living on my own efforts and he can get me down at that moment real quick but when he gets me down what I know is that Christ has always got my back and the devil can never get Christ down and when life hits hard and I fall flat I have the confidence that when things get hard he won't ever get the God down that lives in inside of me because I know the promise of first John 4 for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world but imagine not having that confidence imagine not having an endless God that has your back there are times that I think about this and I get overwhelmed as I look at the broken world that we live in and I see how much need there is for the God that we so freely serve but that's why I love the event you're putting on here tonight when churches connect and shore each other's strengths and shore up the weaknesses that we have as churches because each church does we can meet so many more needs in our community and around the world at potter's house we may be able to meet the physical need for food is one of our strengths we have a great food pantry
And maybe here at first baptist you have a great family program or I'm not sure anything for struggling families or maybe another church has a great counseling program if we are able to focus our strengths and hands and feet of the body of Christ and meet the physical needs of people we may just be able to gain the opportunity to meet their spiritual needs so Jesus's physical need led him to a spiritual proclamation that changed humanity forever and I feel he wants the same in our lives in our goal to serve him when we are at his the weakest we can truly make waves for the kingdom through him thank you at this time I'm going to invite you to stand again as we sing together stricken smitten and afflicted [Music] stricken smitten and afflicted see him dying on the tree tis the Christ by men rejected yes my salt is heat is he tis the long expected prophet David's son yet David's Lord his son God now has spoken tis the true and faithful word tell me you hear him groaning was there ever grief like his friends though fear his cause disowning foes insulting his distress many hands were raised to wound him none would enterpose to save but the deepest stroke that pierced him was the stroke that justice gave ye who think of sin but lightly nor suppose the evil great here may view
Its nature rightly hear its guilt may estimate Mark the sacrifice appointed cece who bears the awful load tis the word the Lord's anointed son of man and son of God here we have a firm foundation here the refuge of the lost Christ the rock of our salvation is the name of which we boast lamb of God for sinners wounded sacrifice to cancel guilt none shall ever be confounded who won him there hope have built you can be seated okay as we continue with the sayings of Christ we're going to be in John chapter 19 verse 30. When Jesus had received the sour wine he said it is finished and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit this was spoken just before Jesus died three simple words in english it is finished only one word in greek to tell us die few words in the Bible have had as much impact on me as these three words at helping me to understand the magnitude of salvation I asked cody if I could pick this words because of the in the impact it's had on me understanding these three words is critical to walking a successful Christian life Ephesians 2 8 told me that I was saved by grace through faith I think everyone here agrees with that but what I didn't understand when I was younger was
How do I stay saved I had this really weird idea that I had something to do with how I stayed saved if we live and act as though Jesus paid for our sin but then we are being expected to toe the line after that to bring it bring it through to the end we are putting ourselves back under bondage this verse does not say when Jesus received the sour wine he said it's almost finished you just have to toe the line and then he bowed his head and died no it is finished when the importance of the finished work of Christ was understood by j hudson taylor he penned these words he said then it dawned upon me the joyous conviction that since the whole work was finished and the whole debt was paid upon the cross there was nothing for me to do but fall on my knees accept the Savior and praise him forever more the result of understanding it is finish is a desire to praise him forevermore that word was a commonly used word back in the time Jesus uttered it the shepherds would use that word when they would look through their entire flock sheep after sheep after sheep looking for the one that was the perfect sacrifice when they found it they'd say tetelestai it's finished our search for the perfect sheep is over we found it was also used by servants when their master sent them out to on a task to perform a task they would come back to the masters
After it was all done and said to telesty it is finished it was used by artists when they were chipping away at a statue or painting a picture and they put the last chip and finished the statue they put on the last brush stroke they would say tetelestai it is finished and it was used also by money lenders when you made the last payment on something that you owed they would take out the stamp and the stamp said to telesty it is finished we know that Jesus said to telesty but just how did he say this word when he said this it is finished was there a question Mark at the end it is finished no he didn't say that when he said it is finished did he put a period just make a declaration it is finished he didn't say that he put an exclamation point at the end of that it is finished it was a it was he cried out and said it is finished how do I know that he cried out and this was an exclamation point Mark I look in Mark and Mark tells us something that John didn't say here and he said he Mark adds and Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last so this last thing this he's saying here one of the last things is uttered with a loud cry with an exclamation point it is finished God the father chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in him over 7 000 years ago at the creation of
The world he chose us about 7 000 years ago at the fall we were separated from him 2000 years ago at the cross he paid to bring us back to himself and today we have two choices one to live gratefully knowing that the price of our sin has been paid to tell us die it's finished or two to live as though Jesus kind of paid the price for our sin and we need to continue paying for it the first choice sets you free the second choice puts you back in bondage to works j hudson taylor said this little poem he upon a life I did not live upon a death I did not die another life another death I stake my eternity is finished praise the Lord it is finished amen at noon the land was dark and 3 p.m Christ surrendered his spirit we're looking at Luke 23 46 the last one it says then Jesus calling out with a loud voice said father into your hands I commit my spirit and having said this he breathed his last Christ he drank the full cup of God's wrath in the curtain the veil in the temple it was torn from top to bottom the first recorded words of Jesus is found I'm going to read the new king James version in Luke chapter 2 verse 49 it says and he said to them why did you seek me did you not know that I must be
About my father's business you see our Lord was always about the father's business this is why he prayed in the garden of gethsemane not what I will but thine be done o Lord Christ has accomplished his mission to redeem the sons of Adam the daughters of Adam that they might be born again to a living hope through his flesh by trusting in his blood and now we have the right because of that to be called children of God Jesus Christ is God fully God and fully man and he made full atonement for our sins it means that we don't have because of the faith that we have in Jesus Christ we don't have sin to atone for anymore amen we don't have to worry about giving an answer for that sin when we confess that sin to the father in his nature it never changed from the beginning of his life all the way to the end Jesus Christ he is the same yesterday today and forever and his character never changes and I want to first point out what Christ spoke at his death he said father into your hands I commend my spirit Christ he was known as a tremendous speaker in fact John chapter 7 verse 46 it says that no one ever spoke like this man yet we constantly see Jesus quoting from Scripture in fact the Bible is his book from Genesis to revelation the entirety of the Scriptures whispers the name of Jesus and a lot of places it just shouts it out and after Christ he took the drink he was refreshed and after he cried out it is finished he could have stopped there but he takes one last moment
To quote one last Scripture in psalm 31 verse 5 into your hand I commit my spirit the spirit of God it rested upon Christ Jesus the Mark of that is how he took refuge in Scripture on the cross by his blood he oozed the word of God the very fullness of deity was marked with a humility and a submission to the word because the word became flesh and dwelt among us the second member of the Trinity became man and he fulfilled the will of the father and was crucified and I also want to point out how personal God is God he is not some abstract mystical force that influences humanity but he is actually engaged and involved in human history God he is the so personal and so trustworthy that the Lord Jesus could place his very spirit into his trustworthy hands we don't we don't commit money to fools or mystical forces or non-existent entities how much more valuable is your very spirit where we can entrust it to the hands of God notice God he reveals to us that the father is the one that we can't entrust ourselves and when we commit our spirit to the father's hand we understand that it is no longer death to die there's a great old hymn entitled that it says oh Jesus conquering the grave your precious blood has power to save those who trust in you will in your mercy find that it is not death to die so even when death comes and it comes for us all for the believer we don't have to be fearful because the Almighty holds us in his hand
John chapter 10 verse 28 says I give them eternal life and they will never perish and no one will snatch them out of my hand my father who has given them to me is greater than all and no one is able to snatch them out of the father's hand and while this confidence is for us remember that Christ he has the power of life and death and he willingly died for you he willingly laid down his life for anyone that would call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ he lays down his life right here and when it comes for us to die many saints have recited these words for millennia they've they've said into your hands I commit my spirit and yet Christ is the only one who willingly did it on his behalf on his own behalf because we're just participants in death it happens to us and yet Christ willingly obediently entered into the father's joy Scripture says having said this he breathed his last and this is the price of our redemption the death of the only and always good one the pure and spotless lamb who was innocent died to pay your sin debt my sin debt this was the cost to reconcile us to God the father and so what will you do knowing that Christ has redeemed you for Christians it may be to give the glory to God and to worship with joy but what if you're here and you're not a Christian then the wrath of God still remains on you and yet he invites you to come to him just like you are
This is why God sent his son Jesus Christ to redeem you because of his great love toward you so that you can turn to him like that thief on the cross today you will be with me in paradise and as we stand and as we pray joyfully knowing what God has done I pray that God would move in a mighty way in your life and mine tonight let's stand together and let's pray God we thank you for your son Jesus Christ and the price that he paid for our sins and we know that you are always good you're always righteous and loving just and holy God I pray for anyone who is here that may not know you tonight I pray that today that they would be born again by your spirit that they would believe the Gospel and I pray for us to remember your death and your burial every day and our need for the Savior help us to abide in you in your mercy every day and God help us to not just remember your death but Lord we look forward to sunday that glorious first day of the week God when you rose again victorious we thank you for it we thank you for the hope that we have thank you that you didn't leave us hopeless in Jesus name amen let's worship together the mystery of the cross I cannot comprehend the agonies of calvary you the perfect holy one crushed your son who drank the bitter cup reserved for me [Music] your blood has washed away my sin
Jesus thank you the father's wrath completely satisfied Jesus thank you once your enemy now seated at your table Jesus there [Music] sacrifice I've been drawn your enemy became your friend pouring out the riches of your glorious grace your mercy and your kindness know when your blood has washed away my sin Jesus thank you the father's wrath completely satisfied Jesus thank you once your enemy now seated at your table Jesus thank you [Music] lover of my soul I want to live for you lover of my soul I want to live for you lover of my soul I want to live for you cause your blood has washed away my sin Jesus thank you the father's wrath completely satisfied Jesus thank you once your enemy now seated at your table Jesus thank you so God we do thank you and we praise you for what you're doing we thank you for each one of the men that were able to share from your word tonight for the churches that were represented the organizations
We just we are your people redeemed by your blood thank you for each one of us who have that hope I pray that we would live like we have that eternal hope each and every day God we love you in Jesus name amen you
