The God of Miracles 05/26/24 Mark 5:1-20

6 million books or articles tackling the subject of demons most of them are terrible a little over a year ago as I was planning out 2024's preaching calendar and looking at this I started to think I don't really have a really good theology on demons you know I mean most of what Americans believe about demons is probably found on you know like movies and TV shows and bad books you know and so I set about trying to find some really good resources and these are a couple that I found that are actually really good that I would actually recommend to you to read okay I read a lot of garbage in order to narrow these down to two one is our unseen realities by RC Sproul there's only one chapter in there that deals with the topic of demons but you can find this in the church library and so I would say go and figure this out read it dive into it's really good his chapter on hell is exceptional I would say that and then Satan cast out this was written Frederick Lee he's he's a presbyterian don't don't hold that against him though what was happening was back in the 70s these missionaries they were going into these tribal areas and they were going we don't have any good resources that deal with demons and yet we are we are at a loss of what we're dealing with we know that it's demons but we don't have a good theology on this and so Frederick lehy he was commissioned to write a book and he sat down and he wrote this thing out in seven months and it is by far the

Best treaties that we have on the topic I would commend that to you as the best resource that I found and in dealing with this subject of demons and so helpful theology all most of them are from a very charismatic point of view this is not and so chalk full of Scripture perhaps you're here and you're not certain about it you're like Cody this is Memorial Day why are we talking about this May maybe you don't believe in demons at all or maybe you think that there's a demon behind everything that happens in our world you might think that Cody this is the 21st century America we don't need to talk about these things well the Bible it talks about it very explicitly very matter of factly and so that's how we treat this topic and I want to tell you if you are here and you are listening please don't disengage okay I promise I promise that we're going somewhere with this I want to tell you firstly that the spiritual world is very real and if the spiritual world is very real then so is your soul and so is the Gospel and so this whole message is going to have a lot to do with Gospel Proclamation but a word of caution and CS Lewis in his book the screw tape letters which you need to read he says this in his in the opening statement of his of his book in the preface he says there are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the Devils one is to disbelieve in their existence the other is to believe to feel an unhealthy interest in them so there's two different views that you can take either be obsessed with them which our culture is or to totally reject it which our culture does today we're going to look at marks of demonic activity and also the mercy and the grace and the freedom that is found in Jesus Christ you might be here

And you might think Cody I'm too far gone I may not have demons but I do have addictions and struggles and sins listen then this sermon is for you and if you think that you are not worthy of the mercy of Christ well then welcome to the club that's why we're all here I want to encourage you to hear the word of the Lord today because none of us are deserving of God's mercy so let's stand together in honor of God's word as we read Mark 5 veres 1- 20 God's word says this they came to the other side of the sea to the country of the gisin and when Jesus stepped out of the boat immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean Spirit he lived among the tombs and no one could bind him anymore not even with a chain for he had often been bound with shackles and chains but he wrenched the chains apart and he broke the shackles and pieces no one had the strength to subdue him night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones and when he saw Jesus from afar he ran and fell down before him and crying out with a loud voice he said what have you to do with me Jesus Son of the most high God I adjure You by God do not torment me for he was saying to him come out of the man you unclean spirit and Jesus asked him what is your name he replied my name is Legion for We Are many and he begged him earnestly not to send him out of the country now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside and They begged him saying send us to the pigs let us enter them so he gave them permission and the unclean spirits came out and entered the Pigs and The Herd numbering about 2,000 rushed down the Steep Bank into the sea and drowned in the sea the herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country and people came to see what it was that had happened and they came to Jesus and saw

The demon-possessed man the one who had the legion sitting there clothed and in his right mind and they were afraid and those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon possessed man and to the pigs and they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region as he was getting into the boat the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him and he did not permit him but said to him go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you and he went away and began to Proclaim in the decapolis how much Jesus had done for him and everyone marveled and so Lord we do thank you for your word and Lord as that passage ends up and where we will end up Lord help us to share exactly all the wonderful beautiful amazing things that you've done in our lives God Lord you have taken this sinner and you have turned him into a living follower of you and I pray that today that would be the testimony of every person under my voice that we would all be able to say I live because Christ has saved me and I pray that today that you would Empower us with your spirit God that you would help us to have ears to hear that we might glorify you more and more father I pray that I pray that you would be with our church and for many people that are sick Lord we lift up to you Miss Kathy and pray for continual healing for her we pray for we pray for Denny and her treatments God we pray that those would continue to go well we pray for Vern as well as he ministers to his wife or give him endurance and let them see you work in wonderful ways as other missionary families return to the states be with them and guide them and help us as a church to support them and rally around them however we can Lord most of all I

Just pray that we would abide in you Lord help us to not seek to do anything but to know you and to listen to that still small voice voice that we that we might walk in obedience God we love you in Jesus name amen well our passage today it begins right after Jesus has calmed the storm of the on the Sea of Galilee now remember back to last week the disciples they were on that boat and the Scripture it tells us that they were a after Christ had calmed the wind and the waves that they were filled to the brim with mega fear that was that Greek word Mega and Christ he demonstrated his power and his authority over nature and this theme is going to reveal itself through this story as well you see Christ he planned to go into this region of the gines and so the question is why did Jesus go to this place in the first place well I believe that was because and this is just me looking at it that there was one man there that he wanted to do ministry with he goes there he does Ministry and he leaves he accomplished his purpose and so we're going to look at some of the characteristics of this demon-possessed man this event it took place in what's called modern day cury it's right over here on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee there you can go there today and you can see just how this whole story plays out there's an ancient Monastery there from the early 200s and this is the Mosaic of the floor do you see that pig right there can you see the ears the eye the snout right there little mouth body there's another leg over there you can't see it because of the angle that we're at but this is this is the area that this miracle took place in and you can go there you can stand there you can see it there's a highway right

Next to it which is kind of weird you don't think of Israel like that but there's roads and electrical lines everywhere but one thing that we notice in the story is that there were pigs nearby now why is that an important detail well we read that in the passage and it's a big part of the story but listen to what God's law says about pigs in Leviticus 11:7 it says you may not eat the pig because its parts it Parts the hoof and is CLO andf footed but it does not chew the cud it is unclean to you if you have a copy of God's word you need to underline that unclean cury it's on the other side of the Sea of Galilee as I said let me go back here and this whole region on the east side was very heavily influenced by Greek and Gentile cultures and that's also important because we read in Leviticus 8 18: 24-30 sayso not make yourselves unclean by any of these things he had just gotten finished talking about all of the Civil laws okay for by all these the Nations I am driving out before you have become become unclean in other words those Nations have become unclean because they did all of the things ate all the food did all the things that you know God said that he finds unclean and the land became unclean so that I punished its iniquity and the land vomited out its inhabitants but you shall keep my statutes and my rules and do none of these Abominations either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you for the people of land who were before you did all of these Abominations so that the land became unclean lest the land vomit you out when you make it unclean as it vomited out the nation that was before you for everyone who does any of these Abominations the person who does them shall be cut off from among their people people so keep my charge never to practice any of these abominable Customs that were practiced before you and never to make yourselves unclean by them I am

The Lord your God uncleanness it means it is displeasing to the Lord it leads to chaos When sin permeates a person's life it could lead to demonic activity as to what we read here I'm not saying that's the case all the time but the truth holds out because sin leads to Greater enslavement not Freedom sin always leads to Greater enslavement not freedom but I want you to think about what this demonic possessed man was like he lived among the tombs and why is that important well because to touch a dead body was to make one unclean according to the Lord listen to the law of the Lord in numbers 19: 11-13 whoever touches the dead body of any person shall be unclean seven days he shall cleanse himself with the water on the third day and on the seventh day and so be clean but if he does not cleanse himself on the third day and on the seventh day he will not become clean whoever touches the dead person the body of anyone who has died and does not cleanse himself defiles the Tabernacle of the Lord and that person shall be cut off from Israel because the water for impurity was not thrown on him he shall be unclean his unclean bless is still on him you guys catching a theme Here you guys seeing what this man is dealing with what hope would a person that lives among tombs have and ever being clean he lived among corpses and he preferred it that way this is one of the characteristics that we could talk about an attraction to death some of you may live near a cemetery but I guarantee you no one of you have ever abided in a cemetery for more than a couple hours I hope hopefully none of you have stayed the night in the cemetery that'd be weird but cultures of death that celebrate and glorify death are inherently demonic because of this characteristic a natural attraction to

Death a culture that of death also minimizes the value of human life countered to that is that many people they elevate the lives of animals greater than the lives of people remember that Satan he is opposed to everything that the Lord loves and he celebrates and you know Satan is just opposed to everything that God cherishes and since God is the author of Life Satan he is opposed to it and so are the demons now apparently there was some history between this man and his community this man had unusual strength physical strength human strength no one could bind them with chains or shackles sometimes we see these videos of these gigantic men who can you know rip phone books and stuff you know it was eight years that we had the power team here you know and you know we look at that but these guys are literally Breaking Chains and they're little guys think about the ancient world there weren't huge men in that time the average height of a Jewish man was about 5' three this was a feast starvation culture they didn't just have plenty all the time they had to eat as much as they could when they had it and then starve the rest of the time this is the ancient world Agriculture and all of its advances hadn't really come about famine was a very real threat so this man probably wasn't this big buff strong man like what we see on YouTube or on TV shows he was a little guy and yet this man he could snap chains and Shackles on his feet and on his hands he could just tear them apart like they weren't any problem at all that's scary isn't it you see with the demon possessed the only hope that people had was to try and control them to try to mitigate the danger to themselves into the person the best that people can ever do in their own power is to chain them or try to sedd them but Christ doesn't bind people he doesn't

Tame us with morality he changes us and he renews us and this was the man's life night and day he's just crying out that word crying out in the Greek is literally crao it's crazy there's no getting around it he's just shrieking in the darkness from the tombs he also demonstrates self-destructive Behavior he's just taking rocks and cutting himself deeply this man is self Haring and this is a bad situation and yet this is what our Lord does is he enters into the bad situation and he changes them for the better amen Jesus he is meeting a man with an unclean Spirit living among unlean tombs surrounded by unclean people in an unclean Gentile territory and that's where Jesus decides go and why is that important because Christian we live in a dark world we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against what against the spiritual World against the darkness that fights against us against the Unseen principalities of this world and that h a Reformation hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God there's that line in there that says and though this world with Devils filled should threaten to undo us we will not fear for God hath willed his truth to Triumph through us this culture that we are in is dark demonic and Fierce and yet the enemies are not those who hold the positions the enemy is Satan and his demons and it's getting so bad try not to go too far down this road but I mean you'd have to be blind or not engaged with the culture to not see just how Deeply the Demonic realm is permeating our society you can't see a concert you cannot listen to an interview with a celebrity without demonic spiritualism making an appearance at

Some point in time during the interviews I mean we know like for example we know like Tom Brady's wife literally practicing witchcraft in order to help him win like that's just crazy to me like we know that he has said that she has said that we're all just like yeah this isn't happening we literally know other celebrities Taylor Swift who is literally practicing witchcraft in the name of entertainment like and I know I know I know I'm not saying that Taylor Swift is the enemy I'm not saying that Tom Brady or anything like that is the enemy what I am saying is that let's not be deceived that we live in a truly secular culture okay we wrestle not against flesh and blood okay and it shouldn't cause us to despair in our culture we see a growing interest in the Demonic and the Occult and the depraved it's okay with uncleanness it's obsessed with death but you know what we are called to do as Believers we are called to lovingly engage those in our dark culture and bring the Light of Christ to bring the hope of the Gospel because of the presence of Christ in our lives we know that we will see God's truth Triumph through us because God has willed it God has intended his Sovereign means of changing this world is by the proclamation of the Gospel which cannot be stopped unless Christians choose not to share the Gospel Christ didn't go into the situation fearful he didn't come into the situation concerned about the future he went in with confidence knowing that the min was going to happen look at what verse six says it says that this man saw Jesus from afar he ran and he fell down before him this word fall down I had to wrestle with this week it was it's the word prano which in every other instance is translated as

Worship now Jesus is not receiving demonic worship here okay I don't want you to think that we know what is happening is that he is falling down in submission to Christ's Authority in verse seven the demon-possessed man he cries out this man he screams and he shrieks what have you to do with me Jesus Son of the most high God we talked about in chapter one how names in the ancient world were very powerful and that's what that demon in Mark chapter 1 tried to do he tried to exert some sort of authority it's why when Jacob when he was wrestling with God he asked the Lord what is your name and the Lord refused to give him his name why because the Lord won he doesn't have to tell anyone his name and yet he discloses it to his people I am that I am he is indeed the most high God did you know that every culture has a most high God every culture it doesn't matter if they're polytheistic or monotheistic they believe that there is one high God yeah look at the Greek who was the most high God there it was Zeus you look at the Babylonians who was the most high God there it was ashra there were all sorts of different gods but there was one most high God for us we know that there is only one true most high God we believe in one God existing eternally in three persons the Father the Son the Holy Spirit not three Gods one God United in their Essence and undivided in their substance the demons and the man they literally beg Christ do not torment him we don't beg for those less powerful to not torment us but those of greater power and the demons appeal and why is that because Christ has all authority they have to submit because he is the

King of kings and the Lord of lords but yet they are also pleading they're pleading with him don't send us away what have you to do with us Jesus it's not yet our appointed time what are the demons saying they're saying that there is an appointed time of judgment the demons know that Satan knows that God knows that there is a specific place and time in history where they will be tormented forever it's not yet time for the Judgment they say and that's why Christ is willing to negotiate here Jesus he asked them what is your name once again exercising Authority and they say notice the conflict here he says my name is Legion for we are many he doesn't say our name he says my name there's some conflict there and he says my name is Legion now that would be a terrifying thing for someone to hear in that culture in that Roman culture because I mean this is this is a Roman legion it's 5600 soldiers servants all armed to the teeth ready to do battle 5600 this is what composed of the greatest army in the ancient world were there 5600 demons there no we don't we don't know could have been 10,000 could have been 2,000 we don't know a lot but the legions were what secured control over all of the region in the Roman Empire but don't miss this that Christ he is encountering the armies of hell and they are the ones that are asking for Mercy praise God they are the ones asking for Mercy they beg Christ don't send them out of the country why there's a lot of discussion about this in church history but a lot of people they see demons constrained to certain geographical areas like the Prince of Persia in the Book of Daniel but I believe that they are begging not to be sent into the abyss because in the

Parallel passage in Luke 8: 30-31 Jesus asked him what is your name and he said Legion for many demons had entered him and They begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss that word Abyss is abiso which is a temporal place of judgment for Satan and his demons The Book of Revelation the bottom less pit is that same Greek word abiso we read in Revelation 91 through3 the fifth angel blew his trumpet and I saw a star fallen from Heaven to Earth and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit that's AYSO and he opened the shaft of the bottomless pit and from the shaft Rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace and the Sun and the air were darkened then the smoke from the shaft then from the smoke came locusts on the earth and they were given power like the power of scorpions on the earth now my post-millennial friends they believe that Satan is there now as a bound enemy others they believe that this is a future event either way the demons In this passage are looking for a way out of that judgment so the demons they turn to the pigs and those are at some distance away in Christ he permits the demons to enter this herd of pigs and as soon as that happens they rush into the sea and are drowned because that is what the demons wanted to do to this man they wanted to destroy him they wanted him to be killed why because that man was created in the image of God and they fulfilled their purpose through through the pigs the average cost of a hog right right around now not accounting for recent inflation couldn't find that number out but it's about 7 $750 now you multiply that by let's just say you know a legion you get $3.9 million in economic loss because of this that might that might set you back a little bit

Right now I have to ask what is the price of a soul I know that we got animal lovers here okay I love animals too I love my dog Charlie he's the best dog in the world okay no one human is worth vastly more than any pet or animal vastly more Christ he makes that clear in Matthew chapter 12 which one of you has a sheep if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath will not take hold of it and lift it out of how much more value is a man than a sheep he goes on in Matthew chapter 6 and he says the exact same thing about birds how much more value are you than Birds Christ he is willing to permit the destruction of 2,000 swine in order to save one man that's that's 700 sorry 2,000 swine but this just highlights this truth is that the mercy of Christ is available for the worst sinner what does this man bring to the table what does he deserve he got his sin he brings a literal host of demons he's got his nakedness not even the clothes on his back he's got his scars some of them probably still bleeding and oozing this man has nothing and yet Christ seeks him out and Christ delivers him I hate that question have you found Jesus that implies that Jesus is somehow unwilling to be found that he's hiding from people Christ he seeks and Saves The Lost he's the one that leaves the 99 to go after the one and here we have that one he doesn't have a friend at all he's unclean in every way this man's death will only lead to more torment for him because he doesn't know the Savior he has nothing to look forward to but greater and greater demonic possession and pain this man is in a worse State than any of us in this room that I know of and yet Christ he has love and he has power and he brings mercy and light and his grace is greater than the most

Heinous act and Christian God he loves you too amen and I have to wonder do you believe that do you really believe that Jesus is greater than your sin I know so many that deal with shame and guilt from previous sins before Christ sins after Christ and we might say yes I believe that his grace is available for him but not me when that happens what happens is that Christians they sometimes abide in self-loathing and depression instead of just giving it over to Jesus and saying Jesus this is this is what I have and I'm so sorry but you forgive me and God he wipes that slate clean when we return away from our sin and he makes us fresh and new and holy and blameless and that TR that's true for you too doesn't matter what you've done what matters is what will you do with [Music] Jesus I mean for most of us when mentally agree that Christ's Mercy is greater than the most heinous act but not for them let me submit to you exhibit a the demon possessed man he had absolutely nothing nothing and Christ saw him out and he delivered him this man was so consumed by evil that evil itself took residence in this person that man was so lost that he was unclean in every way and Christ delivered him praise the Lord and where do we find this man after his Deliverance if we look at the parallel passage in Luke Chapter 8:35 he was sitting at the feet of Jesus clothed and in his right mind amen I don't know what's more exciting him sitting at the feet of Jesus or clothed or joking

But he's sitting at the feet of Jesus and that's important because that's only the posture of a disciple that's what they do the Pharisees they're they're sitting in their judging they were alongside of him they were the ones that were questioning him but what was this man doing he was just abiding in the presence of Christ this wonderful God man that delivered him and he didn't go back to his old habits he didn't revisit whatever caused the possession of the Demons he didn't do anything like that he just simply spent as much time as he could in the presence of the Lord and that is the grace of Christ that he would receive this man as a disciple and he will receive you too and this is important because there is not one person that is too far gone for Christ to save you might feel like you were too addicted too consumed too sinful to dirty but that's not true Christ is willing to take you just as you are when you repent of your sins and you trust in him by faith but not everyone in this story is celebrating and thankful are they the herdsmen they run and they tell everyone about what had happened we just lost almost $4 million worth of pigs what happened they and all these towns folk they come to the tombs a place that they would have avoided unless absolutely essential to bury their dead and they find this man learning at the feet of Jesus and instead of instead of celebrating the work of God what happens they are filled with fear Mark Strauss in his commentary says Jesus is seen as a dangerous disruption to their peaceful lives the inbre power of the kingdom of God does not bring a comfortable life and the status quo but rather radical transformation of individuals and societies don't miss this fact when Sinners encounter the

Power of God it does not lead to worship it leads to dread many folks have said well if God is real then he must reveal himself if I'm going to worship him what like one why do we think that we can make demands of God and secondly he's already done that people have already met God In the Flesh and they killed him they rejected him They begged him to leave them alone and he does the Bible says that God he does when people constantly reject the message of repentance in the Gospel that eventually God he does give up people to their sin in Romans chap 1: 24 2628 therefore God gave them up to the lust of their hearts to impurity God gave them up to dishonorable passions God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done why is that PO important because today if you hear the voice of the Lord the message is repent to trust in Christ because today is the day of salvation you're not guaranteed tomorrow so trust in Christ today and since Christ was begged to leave he left that formerly demon-possessed man he sees Christ leaving and he begs to follow Christ and I don't blame him I don't blame him one bit this man he must have been concerned for his future and he's probably thinking to himself what if they come back I have to be near the one that saves me just in case they come back but Christ doesn't allow it and why is that because Christ's purpose in delivering this man was for him to be the first missionary preacher to the Gentiles what does it say go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you Christ he equates himself to the Lord here and he commissions this man to go and tell his story of Deliverance to anyone that

Would listen and the formerly demon-possessed man doesn't argue he doesn't say that's not fair he doesn't say I'm scared he just says okay I'm going to trust you and he obeys and he tells everyone in this region called the decapolis all about what God had done for him 10 cities and he just travels around all over these greek-speaking Villages and cities and he just shares what the Lord has done this is in stark contrast to what Jesus usually does we're going to see it again next week where he performs a miracle and he tells everyone sh don't tell anyone what happened but here he tells this demon possessed a formerly demon possessed man go and tell everyone go you have my permission my blessing my commission to go and tell about what God has done and the truth is that there's two different kinds of people there's missionaries commissioned by Christ to tell people what the Lord Has Done in their life and those to whom we are sent there are those that know Christ and those that need to know Christ why did Jesus save you look at verse 19 tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you and that's what happened he told them if you look at verse 20 how much Jesus had done for him this is the essence of what it means to be a Christian witness it's not about learning the right words it's not about developing the most persuasive method method it's about sharing your story of what God has done for you John Newton in the hymn he just simply says Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a Wretch like Me I once was lost but now I'm found was blind but now see head heart hand head I want you God wants you to know that he is willing to save the most desperate and unclean

Person doesn't matter what your past is doesn't matter what your actions have been he will save and he will even redeem those things for his glory heart God wants you to believe that he saves the worst the worst of us in order to tell others about what he's done in our lives and shame on us if we fail to tell others about the salvation that we hold and hand God wants you to tell someone your story of how he saved you if you don't have a story then I hope that today is that day I hope that today is the day that you would come to the Lord and say Jesus I'm ready to follow you no matter the cost turn from my sin and I believe that you died for me and you can go to him you don't come to the pastor for that okay there's one mediator between God and man the man Jesus Christ and he will take you he will lead you because he is good and he is faithful even to the most desperate Among Us let's pray father we love you and I just pray that every person that's under the sound of my voice that today they would know that they know that they know that they're saved and if there's anyone here maybe that they need to get that right Lord I pray that they would do business with you and if they have questions about what that means to talk to a friend or a neighbor or anyone to say how do I go about that what does that mean Lord you've called us for Ministry you've called us to do that kind of stuff and so I just pray that would happen Lord we just submit ourselves to you God and we thank you for this formerly demon-possessed man that is a brother in Christ because he believed in Jesus Christ and we thank you that one day we'll be able to fellowship with him in the meantime Lord help us to look at our friends and our

Neighbors as opportunities to share the Gospel opportunity to declare with others how much how much God has done in our lives Lord as we worship together I just pray that you would just work and move father we submit ourselves to you we just ask for your goodness to permeate every aspect of Our Lives thank you that you have called us to know you and to go to people that need to know you help us to labor without giving up we love you Lord in Jesus name amen let's all stand and let's worship [Music] together when peace like a river attend my way when Sorrows like steep Billows War whatever my love thou has t me to say it is well it Is Well with My Soul It is Well it Is Well with My Soul with My Soul It is Well it Is Well with My Soul though sat should B Tri should come let this blessure control that Christ has regarded by hel bled St and have shed his own blood for my soul It is Well it Is Well with My Soul with My Soul it is well it is well with my soul my sin oh the Bliss of this
