Grace through faith and by the atonement offered by Christ on the cross and more than that Lord let us proclaim the hope that we have in the resurrection that you are who you say you are that Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn't live and died the death that we deserved and that we too will be raised with him to dwell eternally with you it's in Jesus name we pray amen well happy Resurrection Sunday church it is good to be together in the house of the Lord amen and whether you're a guest for the first time or whether you're here every Sunday I know why you're here you're here to hear about Jesus and one of the things that Christians have done for the last two Millennia is when we say he is risen you say and have you ever thought about why we say that like we say that we say that because it's true and we say it because it's our hope it's the hope of the Resurrection that gives Christians are oomph it allows for us to live knowing that what we see is not it that when we breathe our last it is not over and so it is this hope of the Resurrection that we gathered today and because it is our hope in life and in death the Bible says if Christ has not been raised then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain but the fact is that Christ has been raised from the dead and it is what gives us confidence in our confused culture and it makes us brave enough to stand in the Lord you know in our Western culture we U we value bravery and not cowardice right that word coward it actually comes from a French word Kart which actually comes from a Latin word meaning an animal's tail okay and so you think of a coward it is those who run away with their tail between their legs that is a coward
Winston Churchill he was famous for his insults and his merciless attacks against his foes and once speaking before Parliament he tore into prime minister Ramsey McDonald who CH Churchill he regarded him as a spineless worm and he said this I remember when I was a child being taken to the celebrated Barnum circus which contained an exhibition of freaks and monstrosities happy Easter but the exhib the exhibit on the program which I most desired to see was the one described as the Boneless wonder my parents judged that the spectacle would be too revolting and demoralizing for my youthful eyes and I have waited 50 years to see the Boneless wond sitting as prime minister of Britain wow burn but you know what the disciples were boneless wonders they ran away with their tails between their legs when things got really rough for Christ they went into hiding they were in Despair and what made the disciples go from cowardly to Courageous from boneless to bold from mousy to Martyrs the truth of the Resurrection is what caused him caused them to go from denying him and running away and going into hiding to being some of the boldest men that planet earth has ever seen or ever will see we must not be boneless wonders for God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind and they saw the glory of the resurrected Christ they saw the Lord beaten they saw him bruised nearly to death they saw the Romans pierce his hands and his feet they watched from afar as the Messiah drank the full cup of the wrath of God and they heard the Lord say father forgive them they know not what do they saw the sky grow black and they heard to Telly it is finished and Christ yielded up his spirit and died a Roman
Soldier then pierced the sight of Christ and blood and water flowed out from him and Christ was dead some secret disciples they retrieved the body of Christ men named Nicodemus and Joseph of arthea and they took his body and they placed it in Joseph's brand new Tomb and they anointed Christ's body with 75 pounds of spices and they wrapped the Lord in grave cloths of linen and the tomb was shut two men could close the tomb because that Boulder was built on an incline and so once it closed it took a lot of men to get that thing open it was designed that way to prevent things like grave robbing from taking place and Caiaphas the wicked high priest he was concerned about that as well and so he went to Pontius Pilate to provide guards to watch over the tomb and Friday night the chief priests were given at least 16 soldiers at least 16 on a watch on a rotation to make sure that no one came to steal the body of Christ but some people they don't understand that God is the God of the impossible he's the one who brings hope to the Hopeless grace to the undeserving Mercy to the guilty and Life to those who trust in him our Lord Jesus is Alive amen today forever Revelation 1: 17 and 18 it says fear not I am the first and the last and the Le living one I died and behold I am alive forever more and I have the keys of death in Hades but do we live like that do we live like that maybe maybe you do believe it maybe maybe you believe it but maybe the resurrection account can become ham and trite kind of becomes something that you do how can we live with the truth of the Resurrection in the Forefront of our minds how can we prevent cowardice and apathy from taking hold how can we live
With truth and joy that we find in the resurrection well our passage that we're going to read today gives us three ways that we can do that how we can live out the hope of the Resurrection every single day if you would stand with me in honor of God's word as we read Matthew chapter 28 verses 1-9 God's word says this now after the Sabbath toward the dawn of the first day of the week Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb and behold there was a great earthquake for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it his appearance was like lightning and his clothing white as snow and for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men but the angel said to the women do not be afraid for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified he is not here for he has risen and he said come see the place where he lay then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead and behold he is going before you to Galilee and there you will see him see I have told you and so they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy and ran to tell his disciples and behold Jesus met them and said greetings they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him then Jesus said to them do not be afraid go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee and there they will see me you got a Bonus one there at the end but let's pray father we love you so much and we thank you for the truth and the power of the resurrection and how it does fall so fresh and so new for us every single time that we examine it Lord today as we study this passage help us to understand the glory and the truth of the resurrection and how we can keep that Truth as the focus of Our Hope for our whole life God every single day we love you we give this time to you
Open our hearts make us receptive to your word instruct us oh God that we might walk in your truth in Jesus name amen you can be seated well the resurrection account it begins very early in the morning it's right at dawn right when it's dark but the sky is just lightening up kind of like my kids woke me up this morning and it was around 3 p.m. On Friday that Jesus he was he died around 3 p.m. On Friday and his body was placed in a tomb right before nightfall we know that was at about 6:18 p.m. At sundown that's when the new Jewish day begins that's why Genesis if you're reading the creation account it says it was evening it was morning the first day for us that doesn't make a lot of sense we think sunrise to sunset right it's different in their culture this is important because Christ he died on a Friday that day that's one day he stayed dead on Saturday but at sundown on Saturday started a third day that's why we say Christ he rose again on the third day and a group of female disciples they went to go see the tomb and why is that why did they go it is because they were so much grief there was so much sorrow and despair and confusion hadn't Christ been the Messiah hadn't they seen Jesus work so many wonderful Miracles hadn't they seen him teach and do so many wonderful things how on Earth could this happen why would God allow for something so terrible to happen you see the beauty of the spring morning in Jerusalem was contrasted by the heaviness that remained over these women's Hearts but then suddenly in their sorrow an earthquake occurs now there was an earthquake on that Good Friday when Christ yielded up his Spirit a big earthquake occurred and the dead came forth and the veil was torn in two but then just a few days later there's another very large
Earthquake in 2012 NBC news they reported that the international geology review discovered that several earthquakes hit the region of Israel and based on samples that they had take him from the core that they found that there was one that occurred on April ail 3rd of 33 a and another shortly thereafter take that for what you will this Angel was in the appearance of a man as they came down that's what caused this earthquake to occur he rolled back that two ton Stone and he sat on the top of that stone and he laughed and the and the Roman guards that were around him they fell back in fear not because of just sheer Terror why did they why did they fall back it was because those angels they were pure they were righteous they were filled with joy and they became like dead men and so these women they come to the Tomb in the midst of all of this happening and they see this man sitting on the stone and this man beckons them over do not be afraid why because today is a day of rejoicing a day of goodness and hope for the world don't be afraid I know why you're here you're seeking Jesus who was crucified and here's what the angel said he is not here for he has risen doesn't say Jesus woke up doesn't say Jesus got better or that Jesus was healed or that his body's been taken or that was some sort of mystical spiritual resurrection and his body was you know just evaporated or something none of that Jesus who laid down his life also took it back up from the grave amen and this is wonderful news Jesus is Alive and yet folks we get we get distracted by so many things we're like we're like dogs that you know has something in its mouth and we're like Drop It Right drop it what's that in your mouth I hope it's nothing that'll hurt you and we're like that where we have all of our focus on these things that really
We shouldn't be partaking in and God he's telling us drop it drop it why because he has something better for us something better than our pride our greed our people pleasing our anger our jealousy whatever has your attention or your desires God he tells us to drop it because the Gospel is better for us Jesus puts us puts it much better than I ever could in Matthew 13:44 it says the Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field which a man found and covered up and then in his Joy goes and sells all that he has drop it and buys that field why because it is precious The Treasure of the Gospel it's a wonderful wonderful truth and this Resurrection news falls on these women's ears and the angels invite them to come and see the tomb and then go and tell the disciple and that is the call to Mission work isn't it to come and see and to go and tell and many people are good at coming and seeing but going and telling is a whole another issue and yet that's the secret for keeping the joy of the Resurrection in our hearts if you're taking notes write this down share your fear and joy of the Lord verse eight says that they quickly went with fear and great joy that's a weird combo isn't it fear and great joy I'm going to tell on myself a little bit here when I first started driving I'm from Richmond Virginia and so little little bit more traffic and I remember it was a Sunday morning is my first time driving by myself you remember first time driving by yourself okay just GNA crank up the radio listen I was on my way to church but you know still I was not doing very well driving and I look in my rearview mirror and I see this little Ford Ranger pickup truck it's purple one and know that's my grandfather okay no one else I've never seen this truck before on anywhere else
All right it is you could tell it was him and immediately what did I do turn down the radio hands at 10 and two check you know using my blinkers okay I'm I'm I'm yielding at yellow lights instead of hitting the accelerator that's how my dad taught me to drive so I blame it on that but I immediately started to watch what I was doing I straightened up now was I a afraid of my grandfather Yeah but was it a dreadful fear not at all I knew that my grandfather was following me why because he loved me because he was watching out for his grandson he wanted to make sure I was being safe have you ever noticed that your walk with the Lord might be kind of like that like as you walk with him you find yourself taking steps of faith maybe you find yourself a little more prone to sharing the Gospel with people or taking stands that you normally wouldn't take or maybe overcoming sins that you maybe had a hard time coming overcoming maybe you're U more forgiving towards people when they offend you or maybe you're at peace more often or maybe maybe you even share the Gospel a little bit more often why it is because of the fear of God these women they left the tomb with that kind of awe and iring fear a fear filled with Glory a fear filled with hope a fear filled with excitement and they went away quickly that word in the Greek means immediately promptly without delay they left with fear and great joy that word great is just the Greek word Mega we know what Mega means if there's a mega mall you know we know that's a really big mul and that's what it means it means loud it means large it means High it means massive Mega Joy is what these women were experiencing because Jesus had been raised from the grave are you excited about the Lord Jesus I mean this is the best news in the entire world that Christ died literally gave up The Ghost and on the
Third day he rose again and Christian this is something for us to be thrilled about you know if the Chiefs win the Super Bowl let's go right we celebrate that and the you know if the tigers are doing good right we celebrate that the Cardinals Cardinals all right we they won last night right at least that's what I heard right yep they won all right awesome we can celebrate those things it's fine to celebrate those things right we should be celebrating those things those are good things to do and to celebrate but our celebration for those things should pale in comparison to the tremendous joy and excitement that we have based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ secondly if you're taking notes don't delay don't delay Bible says that the women ran there's a lot of running around on that Resurrection Sunday you had Peter and John getting into a foot race later on you had the guards who ran and told Caiaphas about what had H happened and he bribed them you got all sorts of people just running around on that on that Sunday but I greatly admire their obedience to not delay and they went to share the news with the disciples you know we have a saying in our home that delayed obedience is Disobedience and that Rings true here what if these women had just decided to keep the news to themselves I mean we probably have a very different Sunday that's for sure recently we have some friends in our community group Jeff and Liz Dutton they're they're not here today but they recently found out surprise they're expecting another kid what's the age Gap like 10 years between they like their youngest and this new one and so they're like oh okay and they came in on a Wednesday night
Okay and no lie I think that the entire church knew about it within about three minutes okay they just could not keep it to themselves the kids they were going out and sharing it with every single person my mom's expecting a baby and we're like oh what are you pranking us right now like it awesome it's good news right sharing the good news of Jesus's resurrection works that way because when we become Christians naturally we want to share about what God has done in our own lives because God has taken us from death to life he's taken us from hopelessness to hope he's taken us from despair to Joy Kate hanky and Bill fiser they wrote the Gospel him I love to tell the story and I love to share that Gospel story and one of you can find it on page 572 of your Himel but this verse is not in our Himel for whatever reason I don't know but it says oh wonderful Redemption the price for sin is paid salvation is accomplished my heart is unafraid for God has raised Christ Jesus to show the work was done his glorious Resurrection declared the victory won do you guys know the chorus to that song do you guys know that I want to let's sing it one more time and I want you to think through the words as you sing it okay you know Christ he healed thousands and thousands of people a pastor he wrote that of those thousands only 40 of those stories really made it into the Gospels and of those stories those 40 stories 34 of them were brought by brought to Christ by someone rest of them they sought the Lord out but most people are introduced to Christ by someone that they know and
Love many Christians they just don't have the confidence to share the story you know I dare say many Christians don't believe that it's the J job of them to share the Gospel in 1993 10% of Christians believe that was the church's job to share the Gospel the church's job that number tripled in 2018 and I'm sure it's you know that was a long time ago now in 1993 89% of Christians said every Christian has a responsibility to share their faith but today only 66% believe that they have a responsibility to share the Gospel you know we cannot delay we cannot delay the truth and the glory and the Majesty of the Gospel missions is not just simply learning about it and it's not just simply giving a dollar or $100 or $1,000 dollar that's not missions missions is telling people about Jesus that's what mission missions work is you see if I want you to know anything today it's that it's my responsibility to share the Gospel insert your word there or your name there my okay and say that to yourself it is my responsibility to share the Gospel it's the most important conversation that needs to be had with people 100% of people will stand before God in the number one issue that will be brought up is what did you do with Jesus that's the name of the series that we're going through right now on Sunday mornings what did you do with Jesus it won't be did you learn about him when you were little it won't be did you have a little wwjd bracelet to remind you to be nice it won't be did you pray when things got hard the issue will be did you ever place your faith in trust in Jesus Christ that's the issue did you love them did you follow him did you worship Him you see that's that's the last point
Of our passage is Worship the Lord that's what these women did they came across the resurrected King and they heard Jesus in the midst of the chaos and Jesus gets their attention some translations say hail some tra Greetings but he gets their attention and in shock they see the Lord and the passage says they took hold of his feet why because in humility they understood the glory of the Risen Savior and they made themselves as low as they possibly could and what had begun as a terrible Dawn suddenly changed into the greatest day of all time and the posture of our hearts must be the same way we cannot we can't say well I'm not going to do that I'm going to just you know Harden My Heart against the Lord that's not what we what we are called to do we are called To Worship the Lord in the most humbling way with our whole heart and our whole person our whole mind our whole strength to love him love him love him because he is the highest of highs and the most wonderful of wonderful and he invites you to trust in him you see the motive for our worship is love not obligation not Duty it's love that he is the sole desire of our hearts it's love I once heard a pastor given testimony after a service a member came up to him and they said well Pastor I didn't much care for worship today and that Pastor said well it's okay we weren't worshiping you it's true as Christians our whole life's purpose is to Worship the Lord look at Psalm 150 with me says praise the Lord praise him praise God in his Sanctuary praise him in his mighty Heavens praise him for his mighty Deeds Praise Him according to his excellent greatness praise him with trumpet sound praise him with loot and harp praise him with tambourine and dance praise him with strings and pipe praise him with sounding symbols praise him with cl loud
Clashing symbols let everything that has breath praise the Lord praise the Lord that's what we're called to do that's the whole purpose of Our Lives is to make much of the Lord Jesus Hebrews chapter 13:1 15 it says this for us through him then let us continually continually it means repeatedly always constantly offer up a sacrifice of praise to God that is the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name that's what we're called to do and we will do this for all of eternity We Will Worship the Lord God Almighty Revelation four it says this and the four living creatures each of them with six wings are full of eyes all around and within no wonder he said don't be afraid and day and night they never cease to say holy is the Lord God Almighty who was and is and is to come and whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is Seated on the Throne who lives forever and ever the 24 Elders fall down before him who is Seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever and they cast their crowns Before the Throne saying worthy are you our Lord and God to receive glory and honor and power for you created all things and by your will they existed and were created this is the purpose of Our Lives for eternity and that is because the greatness and the goodness of Jesus Christ by his sinless life his death his burial and his resurrection when we believe that message we become participants in that Heavenly course of the Saints to glorify God forever and ever and so how do we keep the joy of the Resurrection in our hearts well we share the joy and the fear of the Lord with others so let's not keep it to ourselves secondly do not delay we aren't guaranteed tomorrow and neither are those that need to hear and so let's get after it and finally
Worship the Lord assume a humble position of the heart and with the Saints declare the goodness and the Majesty of Christ Jesus head heart hand head I want you to know that the truth of the Resurrection is the source of fearful joy in the Lord do you believe that I sure hope that you do I sure hope that today you have heard the truth of the Gospel and that you will follow him and if you got questions about it I'd love to talk with you or someone that invited you we'd love to just hear you out because it's the source of the greatest joy and hope and man do you need to know about it heart I want you to believe that the resurrection Spurs on our love and our desire to share the good news because I have a new life in Christ I don't allow for all the mess and contentiousness that you see in the world to get me down see I can live a life of Love toward God and share the Gospel with confidence because I have and I know the fact of the resurrected Savior hand I want you to take time this week okay if you are a Christian I want you to take time this week and share the story of what God has done in your life with someone that you love do it with joy do it with fear don't put it off do it from a Heart of Worship and watch God place the joy of the Resurrection into your heart again if you would bow your heads and close your eyes with me as we pray Lord we are just so thankful for your word today and I just pray that you would fall fresh on us fresh and a new that we would be more in love with you today than we've ever been and that you would just cause hearts Lord that maybe they heard something today that maybe the Gospel would take root or maybe there's someone here that they just need to say you know I've been walking in rebellion and I just need to get that right Lord today let that let them do business with you Lord I pray that they would just seek you out Lord
As a church we just ask that you would help us God to live with the joy of the Resurrection in our hearts by applying this passage to our lives we yield ourselves to you Lord have your way in our minds and in our hearts today in Jesus name amen let's stand and let's worship [Music] together in Christ alone my hope is found he is my light my strength my song cor Stone this Solid Ground firm through the fiercest and storm what Heights of love what depths of Peace when fears are still when striving ceas my comforter by all in all here in the love of Christ I'll stand In Christ Alone who took on flesh fullness of God in heless bab this gift of love and rightous scorned by the ones he came to save till on that cross has Jesus died the wrath of God was satisfied for every sin on him was laid here in the death of Christ I live there in the ground his body lay Light of the World by Darkness L then bursting forth Glorious Day up from the grave he rose again and as he stands in Victory since curse has lost grip on me for I am his and he is mine bought with a precious blood of
[Music] Christ no built in life no fear in death this is the power of Christ in me from life's first cry to final breath Jesus commands my no power of hell no scheme of men can ever pluck me from his hand till he returns or calls me home here in the power of Christ I'll Stand Well church it's an honor to be with you today I hope that you go out and make the joy of the Resurrection known in your homes and in your families go in peace

This website may include tools and features intended to enhance accessibility and usability, such as options for text scaling, contrast adjustment, and reduced motion preferences. These tools are intended to assist users but may not address every accessibility need or work equally for all users or assistive technologies.
If you experience difficulty accessing any content, feature, or functionality on this website, or if you have specific accessibility questions or concerns, please contact us. We take accessibility feedback seriously and will make commercially reasonable efforts to address reported issues and provide requested information or services through an alternative method where appropriate.
